[MHN Yoon Jahyun reporter / translated by Jung Halim] The usual stiff and formal style of North Korean news announcers have been transforming into a new hybrid between an announcer and an entertainer.

The Korean Central TV broadcast on May 30th is a good example of this transformation.

Kim Eunjung reporter is a representative case of this trend. She appears as an anchor on the Korean Central TV 8 o'clock news, but she also shows up wearing an apron on cooking programs, or dips into a sauna while reporting on tourist attractions.

Another important case was back in February, where she appeared on a sauna protional program while wearing a purple lace dress, a departure from usual announcer outfit, which is either a suit or the traditional Hanbok.

Announcer Kim was originally an actor, and appeared in the arthouse film 'Lifeline' back in 2009. The movie is about the creation of an electric arc furnace through the work of hardworking technicians, and Kim appears as the daughter of the protagonist.

The idea of actors changing jobs to become an announcer is rare in North Korea, due to the North Korean tradition of placing college graduates according to their major.

Becoming an announcer in Korean Central TV is already hard enough, as among the thousand employees (by 2012), only 20 are announcers.

The reason Kim Eunjung was able to become an announcer in Korean Central TV is assumed to be because her talent as an announcer was acknowledged.

She worked as an announcer since her early 20s, and in the course of her now entering her late 30s, she has appeared in large diversity of television programs.

This subversion of tradition had people evaluate that the current Kim Jung Eun administration led to Korean Central TV taking a more refined and youthful directing in regards to its announcers.

The content of the news remains propaganda and praise towards the current North Korean administration, but it is the style of how it is relayed that has changed.

The Kim Jung Il administration had older announcers with a more formal style of announcing, but the current admin has younger ones appearing as the main news anchor.

The usage of data visualization techniques also is of interest in this new style of news reporting.
