[MHN Jung Halim reporter] BTS came back with a disco pop song that will blow positive energy into fans suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic.
BTS released their digital single 'Dynamite' along with its music video on August 21st, 1 p.m. KST. This will be their newest release since 'MAP OF THE SOUL : 7' back in February.
The unveiled 'Dynamite' contains a fresh melody and an exciting rhythm, as well as English lyrics that sing about the simple everyday occurances. These elements come together to give off a refreshing energy.
The track starts with the lyrics "Shoes on get up in the morn / Cup of milk let's rock and roll" coming from Jungkook. The other members go, "Cos ah ah I'm in the stars tonight / So watch me bring the fire and set the night alight / Shining through the city with a little funk and soul / So I'mma light it up like dynamite, woah"
The chorus, which goes, "Dynnnnnnanana, life is dynamite" adds to the addictive nature of the single.
Musician David Stuart and Jessica Agombar, who worked with tracks from the Jonas brothers and Hailee Steinfeld, participated in the writing and composition of 'Dynamite', according to Big Hit Entertainment.
Compared to their previous single 'ON', which had complex choreography complemented by 30 dancers and even a marching band, 'Dynamite' has relatively simpler dance moves, and a performance that allowed each member to show off their own personalities.
The music video also showed the members in a room, a donut shop, a record store, and a basketball court, showing each member freely express their personalities. Their props, attire, and hairstyle were all designed to fit the concept of disco.
The latter part had the members dance in a field, as colored powder skyrockets in the background.
The track also draws attention from the fact that this is the first time BTS had a song done completely in English, as well as the fact that it is a digital single.
The group leader RM said on an online press conference, "We released it as a digital single hoping that more people would be revitalized from the song. As for it being in English, we decided upon it as it would be the best way to keep the feeling of the track as it was given to us. Both were a challenge for us, and so we are nervous about the whole thing."
If 'MAP OF THE SOUL : 7' was about heavy material such as inner torment and fears, 'Dynamite' is a lighthearted and exciting track. The members explained, "These are hard times, but we need to do what we can, and find freedom and happiness through dance and song."
The agency said that 'Dynamite' is a 'healing' song, saying, "The track melts the message of both 'happiness' and 'confidence', and discusses life's importance and specialness."
As it is a new song in half a year, the reaction amongst fans are high. The teaser video for the music video, released on August 19th, has over 5 million views, and the music video proper had 1.8 million views in just one hour.
BTS released their track on Friday, 1 p.m. KST, which is midnight in Eastern Time, when American artists usually put out their records. As this move has been interpreted as them focusing more on the international market, it remains to be seen wehther they will surpass their previous records on the Billboard main singles chart 'Hot 100'.
BTS will reveal their first performance of 'Dynamite' on the coming 31st, 9 a.m. during the 'MTV Video Music Awards'.
